Pick It Do It...

My love affair with consistency

I’ve fallen head-over-heels for consistency.

In a world that celebrates following your energy, the discipline of consistency has been under-celebrated.

Consistency is where it’s at, friends.

Showing up for ourselves means getting over our emotions and leveraging discipline when we don’t feel like doing [insert item here].

2024 showed me how freaking MAGIC consistency can be:

  • Consistently saying ‘no’ to a nightly glass of wine = the best I’ve ever felt (and the best my skin has looked)

  • Consistently exercising in the AM for seven months = the fittest I’ve been in over a decade

  • Consistently publishing on Substack (not me! Jen at Some Such Whatnot) = an authentic groove and a following…and JOY for her readers

  • Consistently having time with a good fiction book = healthy wind-down and renewed expansion of ideas, feelings, and perspectives

I’ve never been consistent with anything other than coffee-drinking. I like to create things and then move on. Finding the other side of long-term consistency has opened a whole world of possible.

How long do you have to be consistent to see the benefits? I’m not sure, but my instinct is six months. Consistency teaches us patience. It reminds us that big change doesn’t happen all at once, but it accumulates like snowflakes. 3 feet of snowfall doesn’t happen at once, but one-by-one each tiny, beautiful snowflake adds its contribution. We may miss the snowflake and see only the snowbank, but the snowbank wouldn’t exist without each snowflake playing its part.

What endeavor is longing for your consistency?

What will your snowflakes be in 2025?

What practices (snowflakes) will you commit to (30 minutes a day)?
